Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
