The Kindness of Strangers: How a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the canteen, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I also received no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
