Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
