Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
